The Los Roques archipelago is a federal dependency of Venezuela composed of approximately 350 islands, keys and islets with a total area of 40.61 square kilometers.
The archipelago is located 128 kilometres (80 miles) directly north of the port of La Guaira. The islands' pristine coral reef attracts many wealthy visitors, especially from Europe, some of whom come in their own yachts and anchor in the shallow, protected inland waters.
Due to the great variety of seabirds and rich aquatic life, the Venezuelan government declared Los Roques a national park in 1972.
Why dive in Los Roques?
Diving in Los Roques can become one of the most fascinating and memorable experiences for a diver. Los Roques is a paradise, ranked among the best diving sites in the world, characterized by its clear and transparent water, and the rich variety of marine species of the archipelago will impress any diver. The coral reefs of Los Roques are exceptionally varied environments where temperature fluctuations, small areas of rough and calm waters and bright and shaded areas where an abundance of nutrients is generated. Diving into the crystal blue water on your scuba diving adventure, you will also see a complex underwater ecosystem of seagrass. This ecosystem is home to hundreds of species of fish, as well as mollusks, turtles, snails and the queen conch. Some species of fish, such as the surgeonfish, angelfish and the spotted butterflyfish, have specially adapted to the coral reef.
